Are you one of those people who love the sun? Even if you aren’t lying on a beach on the lakes or in a boat every weekend, chances are if you live in Arkansas you might be a sun worshipper and not realize it. Many farmers and ranchers here in central Arkansas get their fair share of the sun on a daily basis. It is my job to make sure that everyone knows the risks of prolonged sun exposure and how to best protect themselves. SPF…I know it isn’t the most fun thing to do but wearing sunscreen can protect even the fairest skin from sunburn, premature aging and skin cancer. An SPF of 30 or above is recommended to wear daily on areas exposed to the sun to prevent damage from those golden rays. If you are going to be outside working, wearing a hat, long sleeves and long pants can also protect areas from damage as well. Were you a beach baby when you were younger or have you worked outside all of your life? Moles and problematic skin areas can change rapidly from non-concerning to cancerous. If you have any current skin areas that you are concerned about, see your doctor and have them checked out. It is always better to be safe than sorry. Enjoy the sun this summer but be smart and take care of your skin. For more information on sun safety visit Baptist Health’s website.

Did you know that foot and ankle problems are often linked to excess weight?

Being overweight increases the stress and strain the foot undergoes as it supports the body during walking and standing. The heel takes on more pressure, the arch and sides of the feet stretch out more, and the bones are more apt to develop stress cracks.
According to the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society, people carry approximately four to six times their body weight across the ankle joint when climbing up stairs or walking steep inclines. And obesity may significantly increase the impact.

The Ultimate Fitness Challenge (UFC) – a 12-week rigorous weight loss, fitness, and nutrition program sponsored by the Baptist Health Fitness Center – began two weeks ago with six employee contestants vying to be named the UFC champ.

The three teams are:

Team Red — Trainer AD Abston

Michelle Cox (Administrative speech pathologist III, BHRI) &

Portia Jones (Nursing assistant II, 3rd Floor, BHRI)

Team Purple — Trainer Natalie Cannady

Muriel Kook (Data coordinator, 6A, BHMC-LR) &

Rhonda Matthews (Account representative I, Patient Financial Services)

Team Green — Trainer Jeremy Ray

Robert Furrey (Sr. Management Engineer, Management Systems) &

Jamie Holder (Administrative RN III, 6A, BHMC-LR)

Monday, April 9

This was the first weigh-in for the contestants to see what progress they have made. The contestants were nervous but they all had great outcomes:

Robert Furrey lost 6 lbs. for a percentage loss of 2.59%

Muriel Kook lost 9.5 lbs. for a percentage loss of 2.49%

Portia Jones lost 1.3 lbs. for a percentage loss of .36%

Rhonda Matthews lost 5.8 lbs. for a percentage loss of 2.41%

Michelle Cox gained .4 ounces for a percentage of -.2%

Jamie Holder lost 3.8 lbs. for a percentage loss of 1.26%

The winner of this week’s weigh-in was Furrey!

Robert Furrey receives a certificate for an extra training session.

The challenge for this week required each team to relay from the four-foot deep end of the BHRI pool to the shallow end carrying a cup of water and then dumping it into their team container. The first team to reach the red fill line was the winner. Team Green took home the prize with a time of 7 minutes and 10 seconds. Furrey and Holder each received a gift card for Whole Foods.

Employees are welcome to attend the weigh-ins and challenges, which are held every other Monday, at BHRI from noon until 1 p.m. Most events will take place in the In-service Education room on the ground floor and others will be held in the BHRI recreation therapy department. The next weigh in and challenge is April 23 in the In-service Ed room.

We hope the contest will inspire others to begin their own fitness and weight-loss program and find a healthier lifestyle.

Monday, April 23

Below are everyone’s losses for this week:

  • Rhonda Matthews lost 5.5 lbs. for a percentage loss of 2.42%  (total to date — 11.3)
  • Muriel Kook lost 8 lbs. for a percentage loss of 2.08% (total to date — 17.5)

  •

  • Jamie Holder lost 1.7 lbs. for a percentage loss of .57% (total to date — 5.5)

This week's winners, Muriel Kook and Rhonda Matthews with trainer Natalie!

The winner of this week’s weigh in was Matthews with the largest percent weight loss! This week’s challenge was a brain teaser as each individual had to answer nutrition and exercise related questions and whoever ended up with the most correct answers would win the challenge. It came down to a tie-breaker between Kook and Furrey, but Kook prevailed with the correct answer to “How many feet are in a mile?” She won a set of home exercise equipment which included an ab ball, various sized dumbbells, and a mat.
